My last project for interactive studio.

Instant Gratification from Alicia core on Vimeo.

As the semester is coming to a close. I am thinking back at all I learned this semester and I wonder what I will and what I won't be able to bring into the classroom some day. I don't know how many of the projects I will recreate. However, I have learned a lot about different teaching styles and what traits from different professors I will take with me into the classroom and which traits I will try not to.

ART 334/CHEN
RESEARCH BLOGGING AND LESSON PLANNING
Who are the three artists who influenced your work and inspired you as an artist?

A preview of artists’ practices
  1. The artist’s background (personal, artistic, and social contexts)
  2. The big idea and key concepts (what is the work about?)
  3. Boundaries (Media, subject matter, visual form, techniques)
  4. The key artwork(s) (include title, year, medium, and insert links if needed)
  5. The artist’s artmaking practices
    • Knowledge (how does the artist acquire knowledge?)
    • Artmaking problem (how to investigate and express the idea?)
o Technical strategies (i.e., limit color choices or only use secondary colors)
o Conceptual strategies (i.e., play as a conceptual strategy for experimenting, pretending,
      and risk taking)

Jeremy Rotsztain:

Jeremy was born in Toronto, Canada and now lives in Portland, Oregon. He uses film, painting, sound, and other medias to create his art. His art takes one and changes it into something else. The piece I am looking at deals with changing the sound of gun shots in different action films into different paintings. He uses Max/Jitter to create these paintings on a computer. The name of this piece is Action Painting (Masculine Expressionism) He created from 2008 to 2011.

Here is a link to his videos: action painting

I am not sure where he get's his knowledge but I am sure a lot of it is through trial and error. Also, Max/Jitter has a lot of tutorials that you can read and self teach.
For this project I would guess that he put Max on random or drunken color. Where the project itself choices the color that is being displayed. Jeremy would have to make a program in Max that decides the color. Most of Jeremy's work deals with experimenting and exploring of the Max/Jitter program.

Sorry about blank post. Hope you are having a wonderful day!
This week I was able to stop by ArtPrize in downtown Grand Rapids. Once again I was disappointed by the amount of "craft" art I saw. While I was there I saw nothing that seemed worthy of a vote. I am glad that this year there will be two different kinds of judging. One type of judging is like we have always had, public review. However, this year they also added a professional judges. It will be interesting to see how the public review matches the professional judges.
If you would like to see what ArtPrize is like you can go to their website... http://www.artprize.org
And if you live in Grand Rapids go look at the art and see what you think for yourself.

Last week I went to Expo Chicago with Grand Valley. There I saw a great number of different artist's works. One of my favorite pieces was by Tony Cragg called "Around the Block". He is an image I took at the Expo of the sculpture.

Also, while I was there I had the opportunity to be a part of a different artist's work. This artist is a photographer. Everywhere she goes she takes pictures of anyone who volunteers their photo to her project. She also has a website where you can see images she has taken. Here is a link to he website. http://www.tintypeportraits.com
Over all the Expo was huge spectacle with lots of less then artistic work but every once in a while you would come across a piece that make the trip to Chicago worth it.

On Tuesday, I was able to substitute teach for a 3-D professor at Grand Valley University. The 3-D class is a foundations class at GVSU, so it is full of new students. It was interesting to see how the new students struggled and worked through the issues they came across while working with a new material. A lot of the students needed help thinking about art in the 3-D and not 2-D. Most of them were making flat objects with no form or objects that were only captivating from one view. It only took me showing them how it needs to be viewed from all sides to get their creativity going. I really enjoyed my time working with the students and it help me realize I am in the right field of study. Now I can't wait to get in a classroom and teach every day.
